While we’re ecstatic about all four boards in the 10/11 Jones lineup, there is no denying that we’re absolutely obsessed with our new splitboard – ‘The Solution’. Guess we’re not alone in our feelings as the proto Solution that was ripped off from our SIA tradeshow booth was the ONLY board reported stolen during the show. We didn’t need any criminal flattery to tell us our splitboard design is smokin’ hot but we’ll take the bummer compliment as a sign that we’re on to something truly unique…

What makes us so excited about the Solution is that we feel we have found the blueprint for the ultimate freeride splitboard – a board of unmatched versatility that will rail on windboard just as well as chest deep blower. The blunt, directionally rockered nose is the Solution’s secret to the soft stuff as the tip is optimally positioned to slice through the snow with the maximum float-able surface area. Testing in mixed bag conditions clued us into the right stiffness for the nose as it’s a fine line between float and flap when it comes to rocker on firm snow. Kinda like an ‘Al Dente’ thing, the Solution’s nose is supple but no wet noodle.
A few trips into wind-whipped High Sierra cirques reminded us how thrilled we are to offer the first ever Magne-traction splitboard. Whether you’ve had good experiences, bad experiences, or no experience with Magne-traction, please let us re-introduce this innovative edge design as a concept that cannot be denied. Multiple sidecuts equals better edge grip. Period. Magne-traction is especially beneficially with rockered boards as you lose effective edge with an early-rise tip or tail. It’s also great if you damage an edge as the multiple sidecuts allow the edge some grip even when rounded.
But like many of the best things in life, we feel Magne-traction is best applied in moderation, hence ‘Mellow Mag’. Unlike most Magne-traction boards, Jones snowboards will feature a few large radius edge bumps instead of several short radius bumps. The ‘Mellow’ bumps noticeable improve the edge hold over a straight sidecut but don’t hook-up nearly as aggressively as traditional Magne-traction. The Solution will take our ‘Mellow Mag’ design one step further as the inner and outer edges will have unique bump patterns. The inner edge bumps will be mellower than the outer edge but defined enough to give you added gripping power on icy traverses and switchbacks. Up until this point we’ve all been skinning and sidehilling on a perfectly straight edge without the benefit of any sidecut so the inner Mellow Mag will undoubtedly provide a significant new climbing advantage.
After much debate we decided the initial two sizes for the Solution will be a 164 cm and a 168 cm wide. These two lengths seemed ideal to begin with as we wanted to offer a nimble but surfy board for the majority of backcountry rippers out there. Plans are in the works to offer several more sizes once we get production dialed so don’t worry if you didn’t see the size you were looking for. Be patient and we’ll get you the perfect sized Solution as soon as we can.
So beyond the sweet ride and the design details, the Solution has us smiling ear to ear because it also represents our first step into a world that feels ripe for revolution. More snowboarders than ever before are exploring terrain outside the resort boundaries while the selection and performance of available backcountry snowboarding gear has remained relatively stagnant for arguably a decade. Backcountry snowboarders deserve a dedicated commitment from the industry towards progressive design improvements. Jones Snowboards is poised to lead this movement one innovation at a time. The Solution is but our opening move.

Jeremy, the board looks fantastic. Just curious, have you guys settled on an MSRP on it yet? Also, one recommendation – if you could swing it, a demo tour next year would be great. We’d love to have you and your boards out here for a little in Colorado next season.

I’d be interested if it’s anything like affordable. Are you using the Voile split system, or have you developed your own? Binding compatibility – wiIll it take Spark R&Ds? And do you have a German (or Austrian, or basically anywhere in the EU) distributor lined up yet?

The Solution will use the Voile split system and is definitely Spark R+D compatible. The entire line of Jones Snowboards will be available in Europe. Not sure of exact shops just yet.

Are the waist width specs correct on the site? It says the waist on the 168W is 25.2cm, thats not very wide!

Interlocking magnetraction on the inside edge?!?! Finally! I’ve dreamed of this since Lib put it on their regular sticks…. can’t wait!

I am loving the fact that you are providing us a look into the design and creation of what i think can only be the best split made. Coming from the worlds 1# freerider is also awesome.. Thanks for keeping us in the loop and can’t wait to get my hands on the Solution.

The waist width of the 168 is 26.2. The 164 is 25.4

I am stoked on this board. Buying a split has just been looming over my head. The people I frequent the backcountry with the most are on skis, and it sucks to watch them take off on their skins with their heel risers, while i work my ass off in my snowshoes with a board on my back. One thing I’m worried about is whether a first-year production model will have all the kinks worked out.
Jeremy, will you actually be riding this board frequently? As in, the exact sort of model that consumers will be purchasing? I figure that if you’ll ride it, you’ll ride it hard, and it must be pretty durable.

Casey,
I have 20 days on my split and will put in another 50 by June. Jonaven will have similar time as me. Forrest has been jumping big gaps on it and Ralph and Ryland are bigger guys and have been hitting big drops on them. It is safe to say that the Jones split will have been put to the test by the time it hits the market.

Damn it Jeremy, now you’re going to have to apologize to Nancy Cushing for me and everyone else who is about to stop buying Squaw passes. I can’t tell you how badly I’ve been wanting to ditch my 174 Voile for the much shorter and apparently equally-floaty Jones magna-split. Somehow, some way I acquired one of your custom-built Rossignol 168’s with the grim reaper looking dude on the topsheat and I have to disclose that it gives me tingly feelings in unmentionable places to think about what a sweet ride this split is going to be. I honestly thank you every powder day up at Squally for designing that deck, so I can’t describe how stoked I am that you’re rolling out your own line. What about doing a splitboard trade-in deal next year for The Solution to stoke up all us ‘OG’ splitboarders, and prevent it from falling into the hands of too many douchy kids who just want to split down the ridge from the ski lift!

Jeremy this board looks great. Can’t wait to see how it rides. Any ideas on release date and retailers in Idaho? Thanks man, keep shredding!

Jeremy- Very stoked on the Solution. Can’t wait to get my hands on one. You guys have plans to maybe make a hovercraft split in the future? Also will the Solution be sold predrilled for split hardware? Any idea what the Solution will retail for?
Thank you for the never ending inspiration!
Comment by Kevin March 30, 2010 @ 12:19 am
Also will the solution have magna on both sides when in ski mode?

Hello and many greetings from Bosnia. A small group of us for a while now have been going on our own two feet, hiking, climbing, riding and skiing some of many peaks in Dinaric Alps that rise up to about 2300 meters. All of us boarders unfortunately have been snowshoeing up to this point and are looking forward to changing to split boards. We have been doing our research and we decided that we want to get some solutions, the boards that is. I will be spending this summer and some of the fall in US and on my way back I’d like to pick up for couple of my friends my brother and myself some of your split boards. Will I be able to do so lets say by the end of September and how much will they cost? We are poor nation with small income but all of us are saving up so we can get rid of our snowshoes and stop carrying boards on our backs. Big fans of your riding Jeremy
